Beschreibung:
The Moments When You Suddenly Remember You Can Swim ist ein partizipatorisches Projekt der Künstlerin Ting-Ting Cheng, das sie während ihrer Zeit als Artist-in-Residence im SALETTL in Wien entwickelte. Es ist die Fortsetzung ihrer Recherchen zu Inseln als Symbol für Utopien und untersucht die Verbindung zwischen Schwimmen, Überleben, Widerstand und sozialen Bewegungen.
Inseln werden aufgrund ihrer Abgeschiedenheit immer wieder als Kontexte für die Entstehung von Utopien herangezogen. Utopie bedeutet, wie der Ursprung des Wortes andeutet, eine perfekte Welt, die man nie erreichen kann. Wenn die Utopie eine Insel ist, die nicht erreicht werden kann, sind wir dann nicht alle ständig im Wasser und schwimmen unaufhörlich auf ein Ideal zu?
Im Rahmen ihres Projekts baut Cheng eine kleine Insel als Symbol für die Utopie in das an die Kleinen Stadt Farm angrenzende Gewässer und lädt Teilnehmer*innen mit unterschiedlichen Beziehungen zur Umgebung dazu ein, sich in einem gemeinsamen Gespräch ihre eigene utopische Gesellschaft vorzustellen.
Während der Veranstaltung am 24. Juni werden die Teilnehmer*innen mit einem Gegenstand, der ihre ideale Gesellschaft repräsentiert, aus verschiedenen Richtungen zur utopischen Insel schwimmen. Diese Gegenstände werden auf der Insel als Teil der Utopie platziert. Das Publikum ist eingeladen, das Schwimmen während der Performance mit eigenen Kameras und Handys zu dokumentieren und das Filmmaterial auf eine eigens dafür vorgesehene Cloud hochzuladen. Das gesammelte Videomaterial wird von der Künstlerin zusammen mit dem Diskussionsmaterial der Teilnehmer*innen zu einer Videoarbeit zusammengeschnitten.

Aussteigen könnt ihr sowohl bei Station Otto-Weber-Gasse oder Rallenweg. Der Hof liegt genau in der Mitte. Es gibt genügend Fahrradstellplätze. Wir freuen uns also wenn ihr mit dem Rad kommt!

Description:
The Moments When You Suddenly Remember You Can Swim is a participatory project by artist Ting-Ting Cheng, which she developed during her time as artist-in-residence at SALETTL in Vienna. It is a continuation of her research on islands as symbols of utopias and explores the connection between swimming, survival, resistance, and social movements.
Islands, due to their secluded nature, are constantly being applied as the contexts where utopias are born. And utopia, as the origin of the word implies, means the perfect world that one can never reach. If utopia is an island that cannot be reached, aren’t we all constantly in water, endlessly swimming towards the ideal island in front of us?
During the residency, Cheng invites participants who have various relationships with the neighbourhood of Salettl to picture their own utopian society in a collective discussion, while she builds a small island as a symbol of utopia located in the middle of the water inside Kleine Stadt Farm. During the event on 24 June, the participants will be invited to swim towards the utopian island from different directions with an item that represents their ideal society, and the items will be located on top of the island as part of the utopia after they arrive. And as part of the participatory project, the audience is invited to be a witness, documenting the swimming through their own cameras and phones during the performance, and to upload the footage to the designated Google Drive. The collected video footage of the swimming, along with the footage of the discussion from the participants, will be edited into a video work. Through discussing, imagining, constructing and swimming, Cheng is trying to consider the concept of utopia as a verb, a process, and swimming as a way to be closer to our utopia, as a form of resistance, a way to survive, and a symbol of social movements.

From the underground stations U1 Kagran, U2 Donaustadtbrücke or U2 Aspernstrasse you can reach us in a few minutes by bus 93A! You can get off at Otto-Weber-Gasse or Rallenweg. The farm is located right in the middle.
There are plenty of bicycle parking spaces. So we are happy if you come by bike!
