The Artist-in-Residence programme of Kulturverein Salettl at KLEINE STADT FARM will take place for the fifth time in 2026. It offers artists the opportunity to engage directly with the KLEINE STADT FARM community and its surroundings, while developing an independent project in response to the unique context of the site.
The open call (more information about the open call) invited artists to develop a site-specific project for the KLEINE STADT FARM community farm, taking inspiration from the Donaustadt district’s annual theme for 2026, “Excess”.
Out of 144 applications, Lena Schattenberg was selected to realize her artistic project as part of the 2026 residency. The residency will run from 17 August to 13 September 2026. The choreography developed during the residency will be presented to the public on 11 September 2026 and accompanied by a public conversation.

The artist
Lena Schattenberg is a Vienna-based dancer, choreographer, and teacher. In her work, she views the body as a porous site where psychological and social processes become physically tangible. Through exhaustion and the radical expansion of duration and repetition, she destabilizes habitual patterns to transform them into choreographic material (e.g., STILLSTAND).
After years of international collaborations with renowned choreographers (such as Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and Claudia Bosse), she now utilizes this profound expertise for her own choreographic authorship. Her practice focuses on radical self-determination and shifting the audience's role toward active witnessing.
This artistic research flows directly into her teaching, including the Morning Practice at Tanzquartier Wien and her workshop The Many Dance. By balancing internal and external focus, she makes the poles of stability and change physically tangible—a constant interplay of moving and being moved.
The project
As part of the EXCESSIVE COMPANIONSHIP research project, Lena Schattenberg is developing a performative exploration of excess as a state of embodied intensity. At the Kleine Stadt Farm in Vienna's Donaustadt district, she is investigating the tension between a highly intense body and the slower, ecological rhythms of a living system.
At the heart of her work lies THE ACCUMULATION, a daily performance practice that begins with five minutes and increases by a further five minutes each day, culminating in a 140-minute performance. Through radical repetition, Schattenberg examines processes of growth, renewal and exhaustion, making the dynamics of accumulation physically tangible.
The "Pferdestall"/horse stable becomes the central site of research, where she explores animal presence as a form of embodied memory and transforms it through sound installations. In participatory formats such as the Watch&Write Sessions and the workshop The Many Dance, she opens up her process to the local community and creates spaces for exchange, observation and collective reflection.
Her work operates at the intersection of choreography, social practice and embodied ecology, making palpable the fragile threshold between individual limit-experience and collective connectedness.
