The location and its history

Since 2012, numerous civil society initiatives have come together on the site of the KLEINE STADT FARM at Naufahrtweg 14 in Vienna's 22nd district (Donaustadt). They focus on solidarity agriculture, sustainable nutrition, co-creation of our living environment, animal-assisted education as well as artistic, artisanal and social approaches to sustainable development.

In 2014, a few initiatives founded the association “KLEINE STADT FARM - Verein zur Förderung des Gemeinwohls”. Today, this association of around 20 social and ecological organizations as well as cultural practitioners - with a total of around 500 people involved - is the biggest urban farming project in Austria. The KLEINE STADT FARM is jointly managed, used and cultivated - most of it with great voluntary commitment.

The event space of the SALETTL culture association (No. 8 on the map), which is located on the collective farm, was originally designed and built as a training centre for organic farming. Since 2020, it has been transformed into a cultural, educational and event space for sustainable development. With the help of artistic and cultural activities, a place of exchange is to be created that takes up the great potential of the initiatives and networks of the KLEINE STADT FARM for socially and ecologically sustainable development, expands it and carries it into the neighborhood, the district, the city and beyond.

Artist-in-Residence

The SALETTL Residency Program will take place for the fifth time in 2026 and aims to offer artists the opportunity to enter into direct dialogue with the community of the KLEINE STADT FARM and the surrounding in order to develop a project on site. At the end of the residency, the results will be presented at a public event and accompanied by a discursive format.

This year's call is directed towards artists who submit a project specifically for the context of the ‘Kleine Stadt Farm’ community farm with reference to the district of Donaustadt's annual theme of 'excess'.

The SALETTL Residency Program 2025 includes:

  • Residency from 17 August to 13 September 2026

  • Final presentation on 11 September

  • This year, the living and working space is the “Pferdestall” event room (No. 19)

  • Grant of €1,800

Artists are required to cover the costs for travel, materials, and meals themselves and be present on site at KLEINE STADT FARM for at least 80% of the scholarship period.

Theme & Implementation

This year’s annual theme for the Donaustadt district is 'excess'. This theme opens up a wide scope for creativity and invites participants to work with extremes, explore boundaries and challenge established norms. At the same time, the project is to be developed within the context of the Kleine Stadt Farm, a community-run farm strongly shaped by the neighbourhood, nature, children, animals and voluntary work. The aim is to develop an interplay between the annual theme and the location. The farm should not merely serve as a venue, but must also be considered in terms of content. To clearly define this framework, the specific conditions of the site must also be outlined:

KLEINE STADT FARM is situated in a residential area. Loud, amplified music is therefore only possible to a very limited extent, or rather, cannot be approved by the authorities. Furthermore, the farm is used intensively by children and serves as a habitat for animals. Their well-being, as well as respectful interaction with the neighbourhood, are central requirements.

Furthermore, it must be taken into account that all projects must be feasible within the existing financial resources. No additional budgets are available for equipment rental, major purchases or extensive material costs. Materials and specialist equipment must therefore be self-financed or procured within the existing budget.

Accommodation

Unlike in previous years, this year the artists will be living and working in the ‘Pferdestall’ (No. 19) event space in the communal courtyard of the Kleine Stadt Farm. The space was actually still being used as a stable two years ago and was then renovated. Since then, it has been available, just like the SALETTL, as a studio and workspace.

The space, measuring around 65 m², is designed as an open loft and offers plenty of room for working and living. Directly adjacent is a separate garden area (towards No. 21), which can be shared. The room has a small kitchen with a sink and hot water, as well as Wi-Fi. The toilet (see plan) is located about ten metres away in another building on the farm. A bathroom, washing machine and another toilet are also situated in an additional building and are shared with the residents of the main house (No. 6). Overall, the horse stable offers a simple, functional yet unique working environment with a direct connection to farm life and the surrounding nature.

The community farm is located near the Lobau-Donauauen national park. People work on the site in different initiatives and projects. There are some animals living at the farm and there are outdoor swimming places. There is a good connection to the city via the metro and bus lines, as well as an attractive bike path connection (Donauinsel, Prater). Groceries can be purchased directly at the farm, as well as in nearby supermarkets.

Groups and partners / family members

The grant is primarily designed for individual artists. Groups can only be accommodated to a limited extent and pay an additional fee of 50 Euro per person.

Individual artists may bring their partners/family members. They pay an extra charge of 250 Euro per person. Children up to 12 years of age may be brought at no extra charge.

Accessibility

Unfortunately, the buildings are very limited or not at all accessible for wheelchairs. There is currently no accessible toilet. Unfortunately, the shower and washing machine on the premises are not accessible either. Please feel free to contact us in advance by email (office@salettl.events) if you have any questions.
